Durham Regional Police believe a medical episode caused a two car collision in Whitby over the weekend that injured two drivers.

On Saturday January 29, 2011 at approximately 2:50 p.m., police were called to the scene of a two-vehicle collision on Lakeridge Road, south of Myrtle Road in the Town of Whitby. A Jeep Wrangler driven by a 49-year old Whitby man collided head-on with a Toyota Camry driven by a 47- year-old Toronto woman. The Jeep was southbound on Lakeridge Road when it crossed the centre lane and collided head-on with the northbound vehicle.

The female driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a Toronto area trauma hospital for treatment. The male driver of the Jeep was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. Investigators believe the male driver of the Jeep suffered a medical episode prior to the collision.

Members of the DRPS Traffic Services Branch, Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to conduct an investigation. The roadway was closed for several hours while evidence was collected. Alcohol and road conditions are not considered to be factors in the collision. Police would like to speak to anyone who may have information or witnessed this incident.
